Sun protection beyond sunscreen — clothing, hats, and shade
For the most reliable sun protection, start with coverage, not sunscreen. Clothing, hats, sunglasses and shade provide passive protection that does not wash off, does not need reapplying, and covers the ears, scalp and neck people most often miss. This guide explains UPF clothing, hats, sunglasses standards and shade as the foundation of a multi-pillar defence, with sunscreen as the gap-filler.

Quick summary

In Melbourne we tend to treat sunscreen as our primary defence — yet it is the method most prone to human error, with under-application, missed spots and skipped reapplication all reducing real-world protection. The more dependable starting point is physical coverage. Clothing, hats and shade do not wash off, do not need topping up, and protect exactly the areas people most commonly miss: the ears, scalp and the back of the neck. (1,2)
The multi-pillar defence
Sunscreen is best understood as the gap-filler for skin that cannot be covered by other means. When the UV Index is 3 or above, the most effective approach combines five pillars:
- Clothing — cover as much skin as is practical
- Hats — shade the face, head, ears and neck
- Sunglasses — protect the eyes and the delicate eyelid skin
- Shade — reduce direct UV
- Sunscreen — apply to the skin that remains exposed
No single layer is complete on its own, but together they close the gaps each one leaves. (1)
UPF clothing: the set-and-forget layer
Sunscreen is rated by SPF (Sun Protection Factor); fabric is rated by UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which measures how much UV the material lets through to your skin. The Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399 classifies garments on this scale: (3)
- UPF 15 — minimum protection, blocking about 93.3% of UV
- UPF 30 — good protection, blocking about 96.7% of UV
- UPF 50 and 50+ — excellent protection, blocking 98% or more of UV
Why look for UPF 50+
For summer we recommend actively choosing garments labelled UPF 50+. A standard cotton t-shirt can feel light but offers surprisingly little protection — often only around UPF 5–8 — and that figure drops further once the fabric is wet or stretched, because the gaps between fibres open up and let more UV through. The cooling advantage of technical fabrics
A common misconception is that less clothing means more cooling. In the Australian sun the opposite is often true. Quality UPF 50+ technical fabrics are designed to be loose-fitting and long-sleeved, and they offer two advantages over a cotton t-shirt:
- Thermoregulation — they wick moisture and promote airflow while blocking direct solar heat, so a loose long-sleeve top can feel cooler than exposed skin or a tight cotton tee.
- Total coverage — long sleeves remove the need to perfectly apply and reapply sunscreen on the arms, one of the most frequent sites for sun damage. (1,2)
Cotton t-shirt vs technical UPF 50+ long sleeve
- Standard cotton t-shirt — low to moderate, variable UV protection; holds moisture, lets skin absorb solar heat, and protects less once wet. (4)
- Technical UPF 50+ long sleeve — blocks 98% or more of UV, is breathable and moisture-wicking, reflects solar heat, and protects consistently during activity. (1)
Hats: protecting the high-risk zones
The face, ears and neck are among the most common sites for non-melanoma skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) — in a study of more than 22,000 Australian cases, the great majority arose on the head and neck. (5) These are exactly the areas a good hat covers.
- The gold standard — a broad-brim hat (brim at least 7.5 cm), a bucket hat (deep crown and brim at least 6 cm), or a legionnaire-style hat with a back flap. Each shades the face, ears and back of the neck. (6)
- The cap compromise — baseball caps leave the ears and the sides of the neck fully exposed. If you wear one, be especially diligent with sunscreen on the ears and neck to compensate. (6)

Sunglasses: protecting your eyelids
The skin on your eyelids is among the thinnest on the body and is a recognised site for skin cancers such as eyelid SCC and BCC. (7) In Australia, all sunglasses sold must meet the AS/NZS 1067.1 standard, so even budget pairs filter UV. (8)
- Lens category — categories 2, 3 and 4 offer high UV protection; check the label and swing tag.
- Close-fitting or wrap-around styles — these block “peripheral UV” that bounces off water or concrete and slips in around the sides of standard frames. (8)
Shade: the force multiplier
Good-quality shade can reduce your overall UV exposure by up to 75%, which makes it one of the most effective passive measures available. (11) But it is not a complete shield, because UV scatters and reflects: (9,10)
- Reflected UV — sand, water and light concrete bounce UV back up under umbrellas and trees, which is why you can still burn sitting in beach shade.
- Dappled shade — if sunlight filters through leaves and you can see spots of light on the ground, you are still receiving meaningful UV.
Shade works best when combined with clothing and a hat rather than relied on alone. (9)
Sport and outdoor-work checklist
If you train or work outdoors, your protection has to survive movement and sweat:
- Primary layer — a loose, UPF 50+ long-sleeved shirt with a collar. (1)
- The friction rule — clothing rubbing against skin can wipe sunscreen off, so apply it to exposed areas about 20 minutes before dressing to let it set.

Does a white t-shirt provide enough protection?
Not for extended outdoor time. A standard white cotton t-shirt may have a UPF of only around 5–8, and that rating can fall further once the fabric is wet or stretched. For a full day outdoors a dedicated UPF 50+ garment is far more reliable, because its protection does not depend on perfect coverage or on remembering to reapply anything. -
Are expensive sunglasses better for UV protection?
Not necessarily. In Australia all sunglasses sold must meet the mandatory AS/NZS 1067.1 standard, so even inexpensive pairs filter UV. Higher prices usually reflect lens clarity, polarisation, impact resistance and frame durability rather than better UV filtration. Look for the lens category and choose a close-fitting or wrap-around style. -
Why do I still burn in the shade?
Because shade blocks direct sun but not scattered or reflected UV. Ultraviolet radiation scatters in the atmosphere and bounces off sand, water and concrete, so it reaches you even when the sun is not in direct line of sight. Good shade reduces UV substantially but is not a complete shield — combine it with clothing, a hat and sunglasses. -
What hat is best for sun protection?
A broad-brim hat with a brim of at least 7.5 cm, a bucket hat with a deep crown and a brim of at least 6 cm, or a legionnaire-style hat with a back flap. All three shade the face, ears and back of the neck — the most common sites for skin cancer. Baseball caps leave the ears and neck exposed and are not recommended on their own.
