Experience The Skin Doctor difference

Aesthetic and wellness care at The Skin Doctor is doctor-led, evidence-informed, and grounded in a deep understanding of skin biology. We don’t aim to change the way you look — we aim to help you look like the very best version of yourself.

Every treatment plan is built around:

  • careful medical assessment
  • realistic outcomes
  • safety across all skin types and tones
  • long-term skin health rather than short-term change

This approach allows us to deliver refined results that age well — and feel like you.

About The Skin Doctor

Specialised care for melanin-rich and skin of colour patients

Melanin-rich skin requires a different approach — specialised training, careful device selection, and a deep understanding of pigmentation behaviour, scarring risk and inflammatory response.

At The Skin Doctor we provide safe, doctor-led treatment for all shades of melanin, supported by lived experience, cultural understanding and advanced laser training. This includes conservative treatment planning, staged care, and an emphasis on pigment stability and skin integrity over short-term cosmetic gain.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need a GP referral to see The Skin Doctor?
No referral is required for aesthetic consultations. Dr Chris Irwin is a GP-trained skin doctor and most aesthetic, dermal and skin-medicine services can be booked directly. A referral can still help where a Medicare rebate is available (some skin-medicine consultations) or for skin cancer surgery, but it is not a barrier to booking. If you are unsure whether a referral helps in your case, the reception team will guide you at booking.
  • What does an aesthetic consultation cost and how long does it take?
Standard aesthetic consultations are 20 minutes with Dr Chris or 40 minutes with the dermal team. For more complex skin plans we offer a combined 60-minute pathway — diagnosis and prescription with Dr Chris (20 min) plus a long-term stabilisation strategy with our lead dermal therapist (40 min). Fees and any Medicare rebates are disclosed at booking via AutoMed.
  • Where are your clinics and how do I get there?
The Skin Doctor operates two Melbourne clinics — Ivanhoe (1/1065 Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe VIC 3079) and Diamond Creek (serving the Diamond Valley and Nillumbik regions). Ivanhoe is close to Darebin Station on the Hurstbridge Line, with street parking on Heidelberg Road and underground parking accessible via Rose Street. Bookings flow through AutoMed (clinic ID 198).
  • Can I do my consultation by telehealth?
Many follow-up reviews, prescription consultations and progress checks can be done by telehealth. Initial assessments for laser, in-clinic procedures and cosmetic injectables need to be in-person — we want to examine your skin in good light, take baseline photographs and discuss device suitability properly. Reception will help you choose the right format at booking.
  • Should I bring photos or come bare-faced to my consultation?
Both help. Bringing 2–3 photos of your skin at its worst (or during a recent flare) gives us a fuller picture of the pattern between visits. For the consultation itself, coming with minimal makeup — or removing it on arrival — is best so we can see and assess the skin we will be treating. If you wear daily SPF and a tinted moisturiser, that is fine — we just want to avoid heavy foundation or coverage products on assessment day.
