  • Fotona 4D non-surgical facelift → is the face-focused protocol, layering four treatment passes (including an intraoral component) to address facial laxity, texture and skin quality. It is not used on the body.

When Fotona 3D isn’t the right treatment

Honest fit is part of the consultation. Fotona 3D may not be the right choice if:

  • You have severe excess skin — typically after major weight loss (>20–30 kg). A surgical body lift is usually more effective.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding — treatment is deferred until after.

What to expect

  1. Consultation and assessment

    Clinician-led review of treatment area, skin thickness, laxity severity, weight history (including post-bariatric or GLP-1 weight change), and goals. Suitability is confirmed and realistic expectations set — including whether a surgical pathway would be more appropriate for severe excess skin.

  2. Preparation

    The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. Eye protection and positioning are arranged. Any topical anaesthetic is applied if needed for the planned area.

  3. Fotona laser delivery

Fotona 3D uses laser energy (Nd:YAG ± Er:YAG) with a particular emphasis on dermal heating across multiple skin depths. Radiofrequency (RF) uses radio waves and is often well-suited to deeper tissue. HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) uses focused ultrasound to create deep thermal coagulation points. There is no universally 'best' modality — choice depends on the area, skin type, depth of laxity and operator experience. We use Fotona because we know it well and the platform also handles complementary modalities (vascular, ablative) in the same visit when needed.
  • Is there downtime?
    Minimal. Most patients resume normal activities immediately. Mild redness, warmth or a sunburn-like sensation may last a few hours. Treated skin may feel slightly tender for 24–48 hours. There is no peeling, blistering or visible recovery — it is a 'lunchtime' treatment from a downtime perspective.
  • How many treatments will I need?
    Typically 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with results developing progressively over 6–12 weeks after each session. Some patients with thicker skin or more established laxity benefit from a longer course (4–5 sessions), and maintenance sessions (often annual) can be added to sustain the result.   • Is Fotona 3D suitable for darker skin?
    Yes — with appropriate parameter selection. The Nd:YAG wavelength used in much of the Fotona platform is among the safer laser choices for melanin-rich skin because it bypasses much of the epidermal melanin. Settings are adjusted conservatively for Fitzpatrick III–VI skin, and patients in this group are often reviewed through our Skin of Colour Clinic pathway with extra emphasis on post-treatment barrier support and pigmentation monitoring.
  • When is Fotona 3D NOT the right treatment?
    Severe excess skin — typically after major weight loss (>20–30 kg) or in advanced laxity — usually benefits more from a surgical body lift than from any non-surgical modality. Other situations where we may steer you elsewhere: very thin skin where additional collagen support may be limited; patients seeking dramatic transformation rather than gradual improvement; pregnancy or breastfeeding (treatment is deferred); active skin infection or recent isotretinoin use in the treatment area. We are honest about which patients are likely to be satisfied with non-surgical work and which are not.
  • Can I have Fotona 3D after weight-loss surgery or GLP-1 medication?
    Yes — once weight has stabilised. Significant weight loss (from bariatric surgery, GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic or Mounjaro, or major lifestyle change) often leaves skin softer and more lax across the abdomen, upper arms, inner thighs and bra-line. The right time to consider Fotona 3D is once weight has been stable for 3–6 months — treating while weight is still changing risks chasing a moving target and a less durable result. Severe skin redundancy after very large weight loss may still need a surgical body lift; the consultation maps which pathway fits your situation.
